The Lightness of Being

Recently, the 2005 Stanford University commencement speech delivered by Steve Jobs has made its rounds on the internet.

And by now, most people are familiar with Steve’s pithy and poignant message.  Many supposed failures in his life were actually the motivation for future successes.

I found one phrase resonated with me as it relates well to being an expat. It fell within this sequence of Steve’s speech:

I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

The “lightness of being a beginner” is never more apparent than when you completely re-boot  your life.  (Steve might have liked that reference).

The “heaviness” of your former life with its commitments, routines, and responsibilities is completely erased and replaced by the “lightness” of a blank slate.  It is truly exhilarating. You are suddenly remarkably open to everything as every day presents something or someone new and unfamiliar. You seek friends rather than isolate within old relationships.  You welcome advice more freely and search for answers to questions you never had to ask before.  The spirit of adventure motivates you and the desire to explore enriches you.

Suddenly Jackie plays soccer, Katie milks buffalos (don’t ask!), Jeff becomes an art “connoisseur”, and I create a blog.

There is great freedom in writing a new template.
